What is an Apostille? (The Hague Convention Update)

As of January 11, 2024, Canada has officially joined the Hague Apostille Convention. This is a major update that simplifies the processing of Canadian public documents for international use.

  • Before Jan 2024: You needed a two-step process (Authentication by Global Affairs + Legalization by the Embassy).
  • Now: For most countries, a single Apostille Certificate is all that is required.

If the destination country is a member of the Hague Convention, we will secure an Apostille. If they are not a member, we will handle the traditional Authentication and Legalization process for you.

How We Simplify the Process

Navigating government requirements can be confusing. A single error in a signature or seal can cause your document to be rejected by Official Document Services (ODS) or Global Affairs Canada.

Here is how NotaryServe helps:

  1. Expert Pre-Screening: We review your documents to ensure they meet strict government criteria before submission.
  2. Registered Notarization: Our notary signatures and seals are officially registered with ODS and Global Affairs, preventing common rejection issues.
  3. Submission & Processing: We guide you through the submission process to the correct authority—whether that is the Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery in Toronto or Global Affairs in Ottawa.
  4. Embassy Legalization: For non-Hague countries, we assist with the final legalization step at the relevant consulate or embassy.

  • Transparency: No hidden fees or confusing legal jargon.
What is the difference between Apostille and Legalization?

An Apostille is used for countries that are part of the Hague Convention. "Legalization" is the older, two-step process required for countries that have not signed the treaty. We determine which one you need based on your destination country.

Can you notarize the document and get the Apostille?

Yes. We offer a "one-stop" service where we notarize your original document or a certified copy and then arrange for the Apostille certificate.
