If your guest needs a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), you may be asked to provide a Letter of Invitation.
At NotaryServe, we help clients prepare these letters every day. Here’s what you need to know and why it should be notarized.
What is a Letter of Invitation?
A Letter of Invitation is written by a Canadian resident inviting someone abroad to visit. Its real audience is the visa, immigration or border officer, showing that:
- You live in Canada legally.
- You have a genuine relationship with the guest.
- Your guest has a place to stay and a clear plan.
- You may support them financially if needed.
Why Is It Needed?
- For the Guest: The letter demonstrates to the appropriate authority that the visitor has a legitimate reason to travel, a place to stay, and support during their visit. It helps clarify the purpose, duration, and arrangements for the trip.
- For the Host: It is a way to formally vouch for the guest, outline the relationship, and, if applicable, commit to financial or accommodation support.
- For IRCC and Other Immigration and Border Authorities: The letter helps visa officers assess the credibility of the application, the strength of the relationship, and the likelihood that the guest will return home after their visit.
What Must Be Included?
IRCC and most immigration and border officers require specific details:
About You (Host):
- Full name, date of birth, address, phone number.
- Job title and employer details.
- Status in Canada, with proof (passport, PR card, etc.).
- Family details and household size.
- Relationship to the guest.
- Any specific commitment.
About Your Guest:
- Full name, date of birth, address, phone number.
- Relationship to the host.
- Purpose of visit and travel dates.
- Accommodation details and financial arrangements.
Why Notarization Matters
A Notary Public confirms:
- Your identity.
- That you signed willingly.
- That you signed in front of an official.
This adds credibility and prevents fraud. While not always mandatory for tourist visas, notarization strengthens the application.
